What Is the Nobel Prize?

The Nobel Prize is given to people in five different categories every year. The categories are in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and for peace. In 1968, a prize for economics was set up in honor of Alfred Nobel. It is called The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences. The Nobel Prize committee awards the prizes in Stockholm, Sweden. However the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded separately in Oslo, Norway. The monetary portion of the award has grown over the years to match the rate of inflation.

The physics award can be split between different people and different projects each year. Two different projects may win and three different people may win. The nominating process is time consuming.
