The origin of April Fools’ Day is undetermined. According to one theory, when
the Julian calendar was replaced by the Gregorian, people who stilladhered to
the Julian calendar and celebrated the first day of summer earlierthan the
1st of May were called April Fools. The truth is that it isstill
unknown when and where the first prank took place, but over the years, itbecame
a custom in many countries around the world. In some countries, AprilFools’ Day
is called Humor’s Day, while in others, it is known as Laughter’sDay, or Foolish
Peoples’ Day. Even radio stations, TV programs, magazines, andnewspapers
acknowledge the day, and they have played their share of practicaljokes on their
audiences. For example, one of the most famous April Fools’ Dayhoaxes was the
BBC broadcast of a Swiss who harvested spaghetti from trees.Hundreds of people
called BBC to ask how they could grow spaghetti trees.
April Fools’ jokes are mostly harmless, and they are usually played
aroundnoon time on the 1st of April. If a joke is played at any
othertime, it is believed that it may bring bad luck to the perpetrator.
Thetrickster usually ends the prank by yelling “April Fool” to the person
heplayed the trick on.
Most April Fools’ Day jokes are practical jokes. If you want to play a jokeon
your family members or housemates, you can put salt in the sugar bowl orreplace
the toothpaste with mayonnaise at night, so that you can see youvictims’ funny
reactions in the morning. Another prank is to sew up a sleeve ofa shirt that
belongs to your housemate. In the office, you can connect yourcolleague’s mouse
to another computer, or go to the Control Panel of yourcolleague’s computer and
change the mouse settings to a slower pace. You canalso set an alarm on
somebody’s mobile, switch ‘M’ and ‘N’ keycaps onsomebody’s keyboard (it will be
even funnier if his or her password containsone of these letters), switch cords
between two computers, and others. Theseare all classic practical jokes that are
usually pulled on family members, friends, and colleagues.

Whether it’s funny or not, you should not pull any trick that will
displeaseor harm people, no matter what day it is. Of course, there may be some
peoplewho will play very rude and insulting tricks on you, but you should not
mindthem. April Fools’ Day is a special day for people to show good humor
andgrace, and jokes that are intended to do more harm than good do not reflect
thetrue spirit of the occasion. Tricks should be played with the intention
ofbringing the qualities of humor out of a person, so that both the
perpetratorand the “victim” can share a funny moment together. One thing you
shouldremember is that the best and the most perfect April Fools’ Day joke is
onethat brings people together, and the real fools are those who play jokes
tomake someone’s day miserable.
