Every
parent worries that he or she will not be able to help their child with
homework. Some parents make themselves scarce during homework time and others
frown disapprovingly and say work should be done by the student and not the
parent. Some parents will even admit to being clueless about how to
complete the homework assignment, especially if it involves math. Luckily there
are now a number of websites that have been specifically designed to help
children, and parents, with those tough math assignments.
Some
of these are simple form sites, such as WebMath.com, where you can plug in a math sentence and it will
return the answer. WebMath.com
offers math help with problems involving simple addition all the way up to
calculus. Algebrasolver.com
is a software program that lets you input advanced math problems. The cost is
$60.00, but for that price you get help with advanced high-school and college
level math, complete with detailed explanations and a user friendly
format.
Other online math help sites offer help from real people. FreeMathHelp.com has a forum
divided by math subject and grade level where you can post your math question
and receive an answer from the other users. As the name indicates, the
assistance on this site is free. PurpleMath.com is another good site with forums, but the focus
here is more on Algebra problems.
Some
sites offer a wide range of math services, from videos that show you step by
step how to solve a problem, to live tutors ready to help you. MathMadeSimple.com offers free
downloadable instructional videos in everything from basic math to advanced
calculus. While this doesn’t offer help with specific problems it does allow the
student to go over concepts he or she is having difficulty with. HotMath.com requires a yearly
subscription, but you get access to downloadable videos, live tutors, and
practice tests with that subscription. The most interesting tool HotMath.com offers is a "textbook
finder". This tool lets you share the exact page and problem in your textbook
that you are struggling with. Once the program knows which problem you are
having difficulties with, it will give you hints, the steps for solving it, and
finally the answer.
Many math sites are primarily focused on building
math skills through interactive games. These sites usually focus on math skills
for students in grades K-8. One such site, FunBrain.com, is popular with elementary teachers. APlusMath.com also offers free math
games, as does CoolMath4Kids.com. Math games are a great way to get students
excited about learning math and they reinforce new skills.
Finally, there
are also online math dictionaries. Math dictionaries are great at using
simplified language to help students understand complicated math definitions. AMathsDictionaryForKids is a colorful, animated, interactive
dictionary for any math student. The math terms are in alphabetical order, just
like a print dictionary, and each term is explained with a word explanation,
pictures, a sample problem and symbols. Other math dictionaries include MathDictionary.com and MathWords.com, which is geared towards middle and high school
students.
