Lying About Your Age
Many people having been lying about their age for as long as they can remember, and foe many different reasons. Whether it is for dating purposes, getting a job, or getting into a club, people have used lying as a way to achieve their goal. There are usually age limitations at clubs and bars so many people find alternative means that that they can get in. Under aged people use fake IDs that they either make or buy so that they can appear older than they actually are.
People sometimes also lie about their age when they are trying to get a job. Many jobs have experience requirements that are sometimes very hard to fill. Some people decide to lie about their ages so that they can say they have had more experience at previous jobs. This is especially common among people applying to entry-level jobs, especially in the recent years. Many “entry level” job applications require several years of work experience. This is usually not very practical because many people apply to these entry-level jobs directly after college. While people who are active in college may have had an internship or two, very few people have had over a year of work experience in their desired field. Because of this, people sometimes feel obligated to lie to get ahead in the job place. Lying about your age by a couple of years can give you the edge over someone who just graduated college. A future employer might like the fact that you are a few years old and have therefore had some extra experience.
People may also lie about their age at work because of the fear of age discrimination. Many large companies have replaced older executives with new, younger employees. Because of this, employees sometimes consider lying about their job so that they can avoid age discrimination. Although age discrimination can happen, there are several things that a person can do. One thing a person could do is to keep the resume modern. A person should limit their managerial experience to fifteen years, limit their technical experience to ten years, and limit their experience to five years for a high-tech job. A person who is worried about age discrimination should also consider creating a functional resume instead on a chronological resume. Still another tip to avoid age discrimination is to take out the dates. After someone has been out of college and has held several jobs, the dates that a person has attended college are not that important.
People most commonly lie about their age when it comes to dating. Sometimes people feel that they need to lie about their age to get someone’s attention. For example, some women will lie and say that they are several years younger when they go on a first date with someone because they think they will be more appealing in the other person’s eyes. Women tend to be extremely self-conscious after they reach a certain age and fear that men will find them less desirable if they were to say how old they really were. Men may do the same thing and lie about their age because they are either trying to appeal to an older or younger woman. However, age is not a major concern for men compared to women. Men tend to not be self-conscious about their age, while women consider it to one of their highest concerns when it comes to self-image.
Although lying about ones age is fairly common, people should make sure that they are not hurting anyone or deceiving any authorities by doing so. There are several things to remember when lying about your age. It is important to pick an age that does not seem to ridiculous. For example, don’t decide to be an age that is significantly younger or older than you actually are. Most People are able to get a general feeling of about how old someone is. If you are pretending to be an age that you clearly are not, it might backfire on you when your date can clearly tell that you are lying. It is also important to pick an age that is easy to remember. One of the worst things that could happen would be to forget the age you told your date and say the wrong age. They would clearly know that you were lying, and most likely be turned off. Lying about age can sometimes get a person what they are aiming for, but being truthful is safest way to get ahead.
