Slang is a way for people
to express themselves through different words, sentences, or phrases. It is
often used in pop culture, particularly in music. Linguists with a college
diploma on the subject of language have often debated over where the origins of
slang actually began, but some slang words can be traced back to Latin roots.
For example, the word mob comes from the Latin term mobile vulgus meaning
the fickle crowd. Some slang is regional and only used in certain areas of the
United
States or in certain countries. It often
develops from years of different inflections, word meaning changes, and cultural
developments that prompt its use. Slang words or phrases usually develop in two
basic ways: The first is through the deviation away from traditional language
and word usage over time, until the new slang terms become common use. The
second way slang is developed is when certain groups of people or cultures
create their own slang words within their group. This allows them to speak
freely without others understanding it, yet they are remaining true to their
basic language, such as English.
Some people use slang as a way to stay
away from saying things that are either socially incorrect, or politically
incorrect. The use of slang allows people to express themselves without saying
something that may offend others. It is also a way for teenagers to communicate
in a way their parents may not understand. Sometimes those without a school
diploma will use slang more often than people who may be better educated. This
is because slang terms are a shortcut to speaking sentences in their entirety.
Slang was often used among thieves and street people as a means of
communication, whether it was used to commit a crime or to pass along
information. Since there are so many different classifications of slang like
criminal slang, racial slang, regional slang, and Internet slang, it is not
certain where the concept or idea of slang words came from. It could have been
originally developed for code words so robbers or the poor could talk to each
other freely on the streets before arranging their crimes.
Internet
related slang is one of the newest subsets of the language. In Internet speak,
computer users communicate by a series of abbreviations known as SMS language,
or “chatspeak.” This type of slang is typically a series of anagrams such as LOL
for “laugh out loud“, or TTYL, which is slang for “talk to you later.” This
slang has become increasingly common since more and more people are now avid
Internet users. Those with an English diploma may disapprove of the use of
slang, as they feel it is now diminishing proper spelling and grammar. Others
who support slang feel as if it is a culturally important part of the modern
world, and note that many slang words have been in use for hundreds of years.
The word dude was first used in the 1800s, and is now a very commonly used word.
The term geek actually originated from Germany, and became an English word
in 1914. Regardless of the debate about whether or not slang is appropriate,
there is little doubt that it is an instrumental part of the way humans
communicate and interact today.
