If Scrooge Ran for President

Ebenezer Scrooge is known for two things: his sour personality and his famous reluctance to let go of any of his hard-earned money. This kind of philosophy isn’t exactly conducive to a political career, but judging by how the economy is in a mess now, Scrooge may actually have a successful platform.

Scrooge is the type to take advantage of whatever he can without giving anything back. For instance, he would probably purchase a used car for $500 solely with the intention of turning it to the government for the $4500 rebate being offered in the Cash for Clunkers program, regardless of whether or not he needs a car.

If Scrooge was actually elected, think of what his stingy ways would affect. His distaste for people “below” him is well known, so the first people to suffer would be those who need help the most - the poor, the uninsured, those without diplomas. The people who are struggling to get by as well as people who are on welfare would be hardest hit. If Scrooge became President, it’s no doubt he would eliminate welfare altogether or at least severely reduce it so that families who relied on it would really struggle. He would probably take it even further than that, and eliminate state health care as well!

If he was really going to let his stingy ways take over, it’s likely he would be able to target the Social Security fund. Most people already assume it will be depleted completely by the time that they are nearing retirement so it’s not too presumptuous to assume that some people would actually want to use that money for other purposes. The same can be said for pension funds or any other source of money going to people whom he considers “lazy” because they are not working, including the disabled! Scrooge would even decide that disability benefits are wasteful, because he would think that people who claim these benefits are not really disabled, but they just don’t want to work at all.

Another way Scrooge could actually be successful is if he puts a stop to the two unpopular wars. Since the US is getting little from Iraq or Afghanistan, he would likely scrap the entire war effort because it’s a complete waste of resources. Many people would support this action regardless of the motives behind it, earning him many supporters.

The reality is: running on this platform, in the current economic climate, it is possible for Scrooge to get elected. With the nation’s deficit in trillions of dollars, state governments are all looking to cut back on their spending, so the scrimping ways of Scrooge may appeal to them on a general level.

If Scrooge could convince people that all of his plans would save the economy in the long run – or even just the short run – there is a strong possibility he could make it to the White House!
