YouTube has welcomed thousands of users and even more videos since its
inception. People upload everything from music videos and movie trailers to
funny videos of their pets and other things they find online. The site requires
users to register for an account if they want to rate a video or leave a
comment. The best videos rise to the top and get more views. Anyone can view the
website, as long as they have access to it.
The problem that arises is
when students discover their school has blocked the website. Many schools now
prevent students from visiting YouTube because of the material on the site,
which is sometimes adult or inappropriate in nature. They feel students who
spend a lot of time on the website are less likely to finish their high school diploma. Luckily
for those students, there are a few ways to access the site.
One way to
visit the website is by looking for an alternative video portal. These are
websites that work the same way as YouTube, but are less popular and less likely
to be blocked. They also contain the same exact videos, but the computer
blockers haven’t yet found the site. A great example is SchoolTube, which
uploads YouTube videos to their site frequently.
Another option involves
using a YouTube downloader. There are a few of these downloader options out
there, and they typically work as a toolbar. The student enters the URL or web
address of the video into the toolbar and it automatically downloads the video
onto the computer. It lets students watch YouTube videos, but bypass the website
completely.
KickYouTube is yet another option. The website blockers used
by school computers look for addresses imputed that contain YouTube in the URL.
It automatically alerts the computer when someone attempts to visit the site and
blocks their access. This feature allows students to completely bypass the
website blocker, but still see the site. Enter the website URL of the video and
then add “kick” in front of YouTube, but before the www. It would look like
www.kickyoutube.com. This loads the website and the video, but bypasses the
blocker on the computer.
Those who really want to see the YouTube site
in all of its glory can try using a web based portal. Searching for a web portal
should reveal hundreds of these pages. These pages create a new website address
based on the name of the original website, which causes the system to pass by
the blocker. For example, if the website was named College Search, it would
create a College Search URL that directs to YouTube. This fools the computer
into thinking it’s visiting a unique site when it’s actually visiting YouTube.
Students don’t have to worry about losing their diploma because they’re watching
videos at school. They can even watch their favorite videos on their cell phone
or digital device if the school allows the use of such products and they have
internet access. The blockers on the school computers have no bearings on these
products so the student can watch the videos right on the video screen. It’s an
easy way of beating the system.
