April Fool's Day Hoaxes
April Fool's Day Hoaxes
April Fool’s Day takes place on the first of April each year.
This holiday is a fun day to play practical jokes on family and friends. It is
difficult to determine where the origins of April Fool’s Day, also known as All
Fool’s Day began. Some believe it was once the first of a new
year in Roman and Hindu cultures. Some believe this silly day is celebrated
with such happiness because it is signifying the beginning of spring, a time
when everything is bright and new again. Many people like to celebrate this
holiday by coming up with creative hoaxes. Everything from fake pregnancies to
fake diplomas to showing loved
ones a fake newspaper have been used for this day’s jokes. Here are some of the
most popular April Fool’s Day Hoaxes of all time.
- The Taco Liberty Bell: In 1996, an ad appeared in a local
newspaper in six major US cities. It declared that the popular fast food
restaurant Taco Bell was purchasing the famous Liberty Bell in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. This set off a great deal of controversy and many people were
outraged. Regardless of the anger many people felt, Taco Bell got quite a lot
of publicity and advertising for pulling off this April Fool’s Day prank.
-
- The
Spaghetti Harvest: In 1957, the BBC broadcasted footage of Swiss farmers
pulling actual spaghetti noodles from trees, declaring that it actually grew
from trees. People began calling the television station asking how to obtain a
tree from their local nursery that could grow spaghetti!

- Traditional Pranks: Some April Fool’s Day pranks can be
simple things that anyone can do. Some examples are to short-sheet someone’s
bed, tie their shoelaces together, present a fake diploma as an achievement, put
small holes in the bottom of someone’s cup, superglue a coin to the floor, or
just warn someone of an oncoming joke and then do nothing. There are plenty of
hilarious hoaxes anyone can pull off to get a rise out of someone on this day.
-
- PC Pranks: The computer is a great tool for playing a joke on
someone on April Fool’s Day. There are literally hundreds of different things
one can do to trick a coworker or friend. Some of these include the mouse that
you can never click on, printing out fake certificates of a special award
and then giving it to someone, or even customizing an error message to say
something personal. All of these are hilarious and will stick it to the boss
or someone you work with, and are guaranteed to get belly laughs around the
water cooler.
-
- No Gravity?: The BBC was at it again in 1976, when they told
radio listeners that the planets Pluto and Jupiter would align at a precise
time, and this would reduce the Earth’s gravity. It was much like the famous
War of the Worlds broadcast, but the scale of panic was much less.
-
- Richard Nixon: National Public Radio fooled millions of their
listeners in 1992, when they had comedian Rich Little play the voice of former
President Richard Nixon. On the radio show, he announced that he would be
running again for election. Calls started pouring in, and the radio host had
to finally admit to his listeners that it was all an April Fool’s joke.
Whether it’s prank phone calls, radio announcements, fake TV news
reports, or newspaper ads, people all over the world have a great time
concocting some serious April Fool’s Day jokes. For people who love a bit of
harmless fun and making people laugh, it’s the perfect holiday. And while no one
is certain where the concept came from, everyone can agree it is one of the most
fun holidays of the year.
